Traveon's Flat Stanley has more adventures!!

News from Traveon's Flat Stanley on his journey in Ohio..........

So, being so close to Cleveland - the home of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, we couldn't resist a trip to Cleveland for a Rock Concert!  We didn't have time to go to the Hall of Fame, but it was so much more fun to see rock stars in the making =)

The concert was held @ the Beachland Ballroom - a popular concert venue.
The bands we got to see were Tara's Fire & Enter the Haggis.

Had a great time hanging out with the band and even got up on stage with them for a song!

Amoni's Flat Stanley visits Newark, New Jersey

Dear Class,

Hi!  I sure do miss everyone at Eastern Wayne Elementary School.  I am having a very nice visit with Amoni Ethridge’s grandfather, Alton Fields.

I have been very busy.  We have visited many places and the Fields family are making me feel very welcome in their home.

I am visiting the town of Newark, New Jersey.  It is a very nice place.  We have visited the Prudential Center in downtown Newark, it is the home where the New Jersey Devil’s hockey team.  We went to Newark City Hall, The Courthouse, Essex County College, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT, ranked one of the best colleges in New Jersey), New Jersey Performing Arts Center, (that’s were many celebrities like, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keyes, Gladys Knight, Pattie LaBelle, etc. have performed and many great orchestras), Alex Haley dance school performed there, and many comedy shows.  We stayed at the Showboat casino in Atlantic City.  We went to the Crossings Outlet Mall in Pennsylvania located in the Poconos area.

I can’t wait to get back to E.W.E. and see all my friends.

Love,
Stanley

Da'Nyah & Brendan's Flat Stanley in Illinois

Note from April 21, 2013

Hi kids!

It's about time to come back home but we have a few more adventures.  I finally got to ride with Brendan's granddad on his coach bus.  He took a bunch of kids to a soccer game. It was cold and windy outside so we stayed on the bus most of the time.  It is really neat to ride right up front in Granddad's bus!

Today Aunt Heather and I went to the farm because Joseph wanted us to come see the tractors but when we got there he was in a bad mood so his dad, James, (Brendan's dad's cousin) showed us the tractor, the combine,  and the four wheeler. They have big equipment that all gets used when they plant corn and soy beans in the spring and harvest them in the fall.  However, there has been a LOT of rain here so they haven't started planting here -- too muddy.  Did you know soy beans are not green beans?  They are used as the best source of protein for vegetarian people. It is used as a bean, used to substitute meat, extract oil, extract milk,  and used to make yogurts. They are also used to make candles, fibre, used in paints, in beauty products, and also in making furniture! Another name for soy beans is Edamame.

Also, I talked to Brendan on the phone.

So long for now.  See you soon.

Last note for Juana about her Flat Stanley's adventures!!

Traveon's Flat Stanley is having a great time!!!!

Traveon's Flat Stanley is visiting with Mrs. Abby in Newport, NC! Mrs. Abby is Mrs. Rollins' mother-in-law!!  He has also taken some adventures with Mrs. Abby's son and daughter-in-law!!

On March 28th Flat Stanley left Newport, NC and began his adventure to visit Ohio. After riding in the car for about 4 hours, Stanley crossed the state line into Virginia.

Stanley was having a great trip! The trip to Ohio took him from NC to VA and then through West Virgina into PA. The next state to cross into would be Ohio! The trip took a lot longer than Stanley expected ( 13 hours) and he was sleeping by the time they crossed in Ohio.

Hi Traveon and friends! (A note from Mrs. Abby's daughter-in-law, Rayne!!!!)

On our way from North Carolina to Ohio, we passed near the Flight 93 National Memorial, so we went to see it.  Unfortunately, when we got there it was closed for the day, but we were able to get two pictures of Stanley at the entrance.   There was a lot of snow in the mountains of Pennsylvania, and it was really cold!

Stanley has been hanging out up here in Northeastern Ohio.  On Wednesday, April 3 I took him to the town where I work, Warren, which is in Trumbull County.

Here's Stanley visiting our county courthouse.
I always liked this building because it looks like a castle.  It was built between 1895 and 1897.

Trumbull County was very important in the Underground Railroad.  According to historians, Trumbull County had more routes than any other county in Ohio - 153 miles of them.  There was a road called the "Warren Ashtabula Turnpike" (now known as State Route 45) which went from Warren directly north to Ashtabula, a town on Lake Erie, where people could get on boats to travel across the lake to Canada.  Here's a picture of Stanley checking out a historical marker in a park in downtown Warren.  This marker is right on Rt. 45, the former Warren Ashtabula Turnpike.
(Note:  I'm putting the text from the sign at the end of this email, in case anyone's interested).

Stanley's been on a few more adventures this week, and he'll send more pictures soon.

THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD
ON THE
WARREN-ASHTABULA TURNPIKE
In the early days, Route 45 was one of the most active routes on the Underground Railroad.

Known as the Warren-Ashtabula Turnpike, from Wellsville, Ohio, to Ashtabula, Ohio, it ran along this important route. Many runaways found food, shelter and safety from the many sympathetic abolitionists in Trumbull County who stood strongly and boldly against slavery and were not afraid to offer assistance when needed.

Two of the most important factors that distinguished the Warren-Ashtabula Turnpike (Route 45) as a significant part of the history of the Underground Railroad is its direct link to Ashtabula Harbor and its many agents and friends that lived along the way that were not afraid to boldly stand and assist in the fugitive slaves' stand for freedom.

Serenity's Flat Stanley is visiting Edison, New Jersey!

News from Stanley's host....Vanessa Torres

Here is a picture of Flat Stanley reading a letter from my niece, Serenity Roman, who attends Eastern Wayne Elementary School.

I work at Lowe's Home Improvement at the paint department and indoor seasonal department. I help customers who are working on projects on their houses, businesses etc. Flat Stanley came to visit the store and meet some of my coworkers. This is Lowe's in Woodbridge, New Jersey . Flat Stanley has been to two towns in New Jersey--  Edison and Woodbridge.

Flat Stanley has been very busy. Here he is with his tickets to see two movies!!

Juana's Flat Stanley Has More Adventures...this time in Kentucky

Juana,

Here it is another week, this week we traveled to Louisville, KY.  Did you know that the Ohio River runs through Louisville, KY?  It is also used to ferry coal and other goods through the area.  Flat Stanley and I were having dinner at the Galt House’s Magnolia Café and this is what we saw.
The coal flats are just beyond the trees lining the river.

In this picture (to the right) they are going under the bridge and the barge is pushing them to the shore on the other side, which happens to be the state of Indiana.

We discovered something new as we parked to go to the Louisville Slugger Museum.  Did you know that the Happy Birthday song started out being a “Good Morning to All” song?  We parked in what is called the “Birthday Song Parking Lot” to celebrate the song.

I wanted the last picture to stay very large so that you could read about the song.  Here’s another one that shows the ladies credited for the “Happy Birthday” song.

We are never too old to learn and it’s great to learn new things.  This was something new for me.

Our next stop was the Louisville Slugger Museum and boy was that fun.  Did you know that they make wooden baseball bats?  It’s not only a museum but an actually factory still today.    We have a picture of the outside of the Factory and Museum.  Isn’t that the largest bat that you have ever seen?  The factory tour is a must if you ever visit Louisville.

It’s quite the experience to see them cutting the wood and all of the work that goes into the process.

The next picture shows another aspect of Louisville, probably one of the most know facts.  It is the location of the Kentucky Derby that is held in May.  At the airport there is a statue of a Jockey riding a race horse.  So we had to have a picture of Flat Stanley and the Jockey on the horse.

The Kentucky Derby is held at Churchill Downs and Flat Stanley is just tagging along.

I hope you have enjoyed our Kentucky trip as much as we did.  This weekend we will spend time with Evelyn’s other daughter Amy and her two sons.  We hope to have more pictures and fun times.

Thanks,

Flat Stanley and Evelyn

Brendan's Flat Stanley Visits Illinois

Stanley's News:

This week I spent time with Brendan Smith’s Aunt Heather.  She lives in Sterling, IL.  We started out watching Brendan’s 3 year old cousin Dani last Saturday.  She built me this awesome castle to play in!  We had fun together.

During the week Aunt Heather works for a company called Halo Branded Solutions.  They help people order stuff that has their company’s name on it.  She does all her work on the computer.  She did several orders for a Children’s hospital while I was with her.  They ordered chapstick with the hospital’s name on it.  The most popular flavor was cherry!  Aunt Heather said that was her favorite too when she was a kid.  They even ordered some teddy bears with the hospital’s name on the t-shirt for the kids to have.  The teddy bears were really cute!!

Aunt Heather eats her lunch in a lunch room every day.  The lunch room has lots of tables and even has a place where you can buy special treats.  I found Brendan’s favorite candy bar- the Snickers!

She wanted to take pictures of me with all her friends at work but they were all camera shy and didn’t want to have their picture taken. L

On Friday night, Aunt Heather had to decorate a cake for Brendan’s Great-Grandma’s 85th birthday.  It was lots of fun to help her with it.  She even let me do a little bit.  On Saturday we went out to Brendan’s Granddad and Granny’s house in Coleta, IL to celebrate Great Grandma’s 85th birthday.

Great Grandma loved her cake.  I have had a lot of fun with Aunt Heather; this week I am going to see where Brendan’s Granddad is driving his big bus.

More Adventures from Da'Nyah's Flat Stanley

Mar 23

Hello from northern Illinois and Wisconsin:  This is D'Nyah's Stanley visiting with Brendan's grandparents.

On Thursday we traveled from Illinois up into Wisconsin where Granny had to see a doctor in LaCrosse to be checked for allergies.  There's a lot more snow up in Wisconsin.  We drove along the Mississippi River. It is a very long river that runs 2,530 miles from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. It is the largest river in the United States and when there is no ice on it, big barges carry coal and farm grains north and south on the river.   There are many locks and dams along the northern part of the river to help boats navigate the differing levels of water.  But right now there is still a lot of ice on the river up here.

Ice Fishing

Some places the ice was so thick they drove trucks out on the river as you can see in the pictures. Where the river ices over men and women like to fish.  They go out on the ice, sometimes taking a little tent, drill a hole in the ice to put their fishing lines down below into the water. We talked to some people who told us they catch Blue Gill, Croppie and Great Northern fish, some as long as 18" or more. The ice was 12-15" thick where we saw them fishing.  Other places it was clear water. It was really neat.

We also saw some Eagles which live along the river high in the trees.  They swoop down to open water and catch fish to eat.  We were able to get a picture of one eagle. They are huge!

In LaCrosse we saw a statue of an Indian, Hiawatha. It was carved out of wood and very tall.  You can see me with Granddad standing near it.

Granny getting her allergy tests

Then we went to see Dr Mary.  Granny has breathing problems so the doctor was testing her to see what she is allergic to.  They put lots of needles up and down her arm.  I didn't want to look.  Granny is allergic to ragweed, dust mites and mold.  The doctor gave her some drops.  Dr Mary was very nice and liked hearing my story of how I became flat and why I am visiting Granny and Granddad.  We stayed overnight in a motel because it is a long drive up there.
